WOOSTER – Charles Frederick McClure died January 10 following a period of declining health. He was 96 years old. He and his wife of 76 years, Grace (Rice), had resided together at Country Pointe Skilled Care Facility in New Pittsburg since 2006. She survives.
Charles was born March 9, 1913, in Plain Township to Alonzo Ross and Florence Mary (Zimmerman) McClure. He learned to plow with a team of horses when he was 10 years old, and never forgot the lay of the land on the farms he lived on as a boy. He received his education in the one room schools of Chester Township and was a graduate of Chester High School.
After their marriage in 1933, Charles and Grace farmed and raised their family in Chester Township. In addition to his farming, Charles enjoyed sharing a good story with cherished neighbors and friends. He played the harmonica to entertain his children and grandchildren, and delighted in showing how his pocket watch went tick-tock to the littlest ones as he held them on his knee.
In addition to his wife, Chales is survived by sons C. Frederick (Nancy) of Ashland, John (Diana), Franklin (Hollie) and James, all of Wooster; daughters Betty (Donald) Morrow of Wooster, Charlotte (Kenneth) Phillips of Loudonville, and Jane (Michael) Stoccardo of Washington; 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be handled by McIntire, Davis and Greene Funeral Home. Calling hours will be January 13, from 6:00-9:00 p.m. The funeral will be January 14 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. John Fitch officiating. Burial will be in the Reedsburg Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the New Pittsburg Fire and Rescue Squad. Charles’s family thanks the staff of Country Pointe for the care he received while there.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by sons R. Edward and Benjamin and a sister Elizabeth (Joseph) Ritter.
