WOOSTER “ Cora C. Gigax, 96, of Wooster passed away on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at West View Healthy Living.
She was born August 4, 1921 in Fort Pierre, South Dakota, the daughter of Rev. Vincent and Ethleen Ishee Chaffee.
Cora graduated from Gregory and Geddes High School and received a teaching certificate from Dakota Wesleyan University.   She taught elementary grades for several years in Illinois.   She worked as a secretary for military office personnel at an Air Force base in Cuba, Illinois during WWII where she met Lester Gigax.   They were married February 16, 1944.   While he attended Purdue University, she worked as a secretary in the Agricultural Dept.   They were married until his death November 10, 1986.   They moved to Wooster when Lester was hired by the Wooster Rubber Company (Rubbermaid).
She was a life member and past president of Wooster Hospital Auxiliary, served as volunteer coordinator of Head Start, served on the Wooster Day Care Board, the Board of Trustees of the Elyria Methodist Home, long-time member of the Wooster Country Club where she served on the board, she belonged to the Wooster United Methodist Church for over 50 years.   Music was an important part of her life and she had a beautiful contralto voice.   She was a long-time member of the church choir and a frequent soloist.   Cora was also a past president of United Methodist Women, member of the district United Methodist Parsonage Committee, taught Sunday school, church circle leader, and charter member of the NE Ohio Conference Committee on the role and status of women in the United Methodist Church.   She was past president of the Wooster MacDowell Club.
Surviving are her children, Leslie (Steve) Knowling, Larry (Julie) Gigax and Bruce (Trina) Gigax; grandchildren, Amy (Matt) Rohr, Jim (Melinda) McCoy, Joshua (Alexis) McCoy, Brian Gigax, Travis (Beth) Gigax, Jenny (Dave) May, Kate (Dan) Seiler, Meghan (Dan) Davis, Erin (Andy) Buchholz, Kate (Ben) Turshen; 17 great-grandchildren and a special friend, Pete Bogner.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester, and siblings, George, Bill, Vincent, Phyllis and Janette.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 15, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Wooster United Methodist Church, 243 N. Market St., Wooster with the Rev. Charles Tobias officiating.   The family will receive friends following the service.
McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family.
