David W. Chatlain, 87, of Wooster, died Friday, March 20, 2009, at Westview Manor.
He was born February 4, 1922, in Mansfield, OH, the son of the late Byron and Hazel (Umbarger) Chatlain.
David was the owner and operator of Chatlain’s Motorcenter, served his country in the Army, along with his three brothers, during World War II and was Past-President of The Dealer Council for Fiat.
David started his career in the automobile business as a teenager after buying a 1931 Auburn Phaeton, which he refurbished. After his discharge from the military and his marriage to his wife Marian, he took a job with Raymond-Luke Motors in Cleveland as a parts and service manager in their new line of Frazer and Kaiser Cars. In the fall of 1951, he bought the Wooster franchise of Raymond-Luke motors that also included the Packard line of cars. When he sold a Packard, he had to take the train to Pittsburg and drive it back to Wooster for the customer to pick up the next day. David finally ended up importing sports cars including the MG and Fiat. David was proud that in the years he was in business, over 49 other dealerships came and went, and that he had sold more imported cars than the other dealerships put together.
Surviving are wife, Marian Reese Chatlain of Wooster whom he’d been married to for over 64 years; children Christine (Dwight) Miller of Kent, David R. (Ann) Chatlain of Wichita, KS, Nancy Schneider of Cincinnati and Jill (James) Chatlain-Roberts of Atlanta, GA, and nine grandchildren.
Along with his parents, David was preceded in death by his three brothers.
