Doris May Ickes Bowers, 90, of Wooster died on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at Glendora.
She was born May 23, 1930 in Wooster to Hubert Guy and Flora Shoup Ickes.   She was raised by her uncle and aunt, Forest œHats  and Clara Shoup Franks whom she called Mom and Hatsie.   On February 11, 1956 she married Roy Dean Bowers.   He survives.
Doris had been a grade school teacher at Hazel Harvey in Doylestown, Layton Elementary in Wooster and retired from Apple Creek Elementary after 25 years.   She was a longtime member of Bethel United Methodist Church, and Heartland Covenant.   Doris had most recently been attending Church of the Saviour.   She and her husband were members of the National Farmers Organization and received the NFO Farmer of the Year Award in 1997.   She was a volunteer with the Pregnancy Care Center.
Along with her husband, Doris is survived by her daughters Nancy Musser and Ann (Mike) Leighty; grandchildren Crystal (Ed) Musser Stutz, Courtney (Steve) Musser Huszai, Michelle Leighty and Marcy Leighty; great-grandchildren Bella and Lynnley Stutz; siblings Elma Fisher of Wooster,  Robert Ickes of Polk, Paul Ickes of Wooster and sister-in-law Thelma Ickes of Wooster.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hatsie and Mom,  sisters Bertha Elser, Pauline Shank, Leora Bussinger and brothers Don, Harold and Clayton Ickes.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at 1:00 PM at Church of the Saviour, 480 Fry Rd, Wooster with Pastor Bill Beery officiating.   Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
Friends will be received on Friday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the church.
Masks will be required and social distancing will be observed.
McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family.

  3. I wish to send my deepest sympathies to the family in your time of loss. Mrs. Bowers was my 1st grade teacher, and I remember her fondly. Looking back on my years at Apple Creek Elementary, she was a favorite teacher of mine. Of course that was 44 years ago,so all I really can recall is she was someone I respected and wanted to please. I am glad to know we will see one another in the hereafter.

  4. I can’t begin to express the wonderful memories that I have of Doris. She was such a blessing. I will remember her grape pie that she secretly brought to the HCC dinners. And the marriage studies that we did with her and Roy. Such a wonderful lady! My prayers are with Roy.

    We were so sad to hear of Mrs. Bowers passing. She was such a nice lady and we always enjoyed talking to her when Ann and our daughter, Sherry, were together. We extend our deepest sympathy to your entire family. May God bless you and bring comfort to all of you.

  8. Roy, Nancy, Ann and family. We send our sincere sympathy to all of you at this difficult time. I will always remember Doris as a very kind and caring lady. We will not be attending services as I am recovering from surgery . Know that our prayers and thoughts are with all of you.
