WOOSTER – Dorothy Mae “Dottie” Drabenstott Slater passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 15, 2022 at Wooster Community Hospital with her daughter by her side following a brief illness.

She was born in Wooster on March 26, 1927 and was the daughter of Karl and Flossie Kestler Drabenstott.  She married Richard Slater on March 10, 1946 and had 66 wonderful years together.

Dorothy graduated from Wooster High School in 1944 and then went to Akron for 6 months of training as a nurse.  She also was a cashier for Sears and Roebuck, secretary with Jamison Insurance and a waitress at the Farm and Dairy Restaurant.  She then went to Farmers Production Credit where she retired after 20 plus years on August 1, 1981.

She and her husband traveled the 48 states and had many special and unusual events, one being able to see Old Faithful Geyser in action.

Dorothy was known as the “cookie lady” and had many recipes that she made and shared over the years.  She was a 50-year member of the Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir, was a deaconess and worked in the office.  She and Dick then joined the First Church of God, where they both did volunteer work.  She also volunteered at the Salvation Army, delivered Meals on Wheels, was a Boy Scout Den Mother and organized a group of Blue Star Mothers who sent newsletters to all in the military.

Dorothy was an avid golfer and bowler, enjoyed exercising and water classes at the Community Center.  She also enjoyed playing all kinds of cards with pinochle being her favorite.  She collected frogs of all types and has a room dedicated to her collection.  She also enjoyed traveling around Ohio with her dear friends Toni Molter, Twyla Musser and Corky Snyder.  She and Dick were members of Gnat Boxer Club.  She was a long-time member of the Wayne County Republican Woman’s Association and enjoyed working in their booth during fair week.  She was a member of the Apple Creek Legion Auxiliary since 1954.  Dorothy also enjoyed working number puzzles in her retirement.

Dorothy loved her family dearly.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, on May 1, 2012, her parents, brother Robert Drabenstott, sister Helen Billheimer and son Mauri Slater on March 25, 2016.  She is survived by children Sharon Zile of Wooster and Gary (Katherine) Slater of Las Vegas, Nevada, two grandchildren Timothy (Jenny) Slater of Mesa Arizona and Amanda (Brian) Polito of Las Vegas, Nevada and one great-grandchild Chloe Polito of Las Vegas, Nevada.

A memorial service will be held at the First Church of God, 1953 Akron Road on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Arnie Kaufman and Pastor Ken Thomas officiating.  The family will greet friends 1 hour prior to the service.

Condolences

Mama/Gigi, We miss you and love you so much! Please watch over Chloe and fill Papa and Mauri in on how wonderful she is (although I am sure they already know :) ) We are so blessed that we got to make your birthday special and spoiled you rotten. I promise to try to master your chocolate chip cookie recipe and carry on your Cookie Lady status. Thank you for being the best grandmother a girl could have had. For the shopping trips for school clothes every summer (we took the bus!) to always welcoming all my college friends into your home and feeding all of us while we did our laundry for free. You are one of a kind and can never be replaced. We love you!

I was blessed by the cookie lady many many times!! She wouldn’t just bring you a few…she brought a whole plate full!! I never had one that wasn’t delicious!! My condolences to her family!!
