Edward Sherck, 91, of Wooster died Wednesday Oct. 1, 2008 at Sunrise Assisted Living.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday October 7, at 4:00 PM at Trinity United Church of Christ. Friends will be received an1 1/2 prior to the service at the church and after the service. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to People to People Ministries 454 E. Bowman St. Wooster, Ohio 44691 or to Habitat for Humanity of Wayne County 1451 Spruce St. Ext Wooster, Ohio 44691.
Ed was born to George and Myrtle Feightner Sherck on May 2, 1917 in Moreland, Ohio. He was one of four children and a lifelong resident of Wayne County. He was a respected building contractor and land developer for over 30 years. Sherwood Hills, Edgewood and Johnny Appleseed were a few of his projects. After leaving the contracting business he became active in area oilfields where he acquired, renovated and operated gas and oil leases. He was a member of four different school boards including those that built Triway High School and the Joint Vocational School. Ed was an active member of Trinity United Church of Christ where he served on numerous committees and was instrumental in several major building projects. He was an accomplished woodworker whose furniture and crafts are found throughout the homes of his family and many friends.
In 1939 he was married to Grace E. Hoare who died in 1968. He married Helen Y. Mathes in 1969 and she died in 2005. He survived by two children, Michael(Carolyn) Sherck of Plymouth, Minnesota and Deborah Sherck of Portland, Oregon as well as his sister Helen Scott and her son Richard(Kathy) Scott of North Olmsted, Ohio. His son John Sherck of Gold Hill, Oregon preceded him in death.
Ed is also survived by Helen’s children Kent(Pat) Mathes of Fort McDowell, Arizona, Meta(Mark)Meckstroth of State College, Pennsylvania, Lincoln(Nancy) Mathes of Columbus, Indiana and Mark(Susan) Mathes of Elyria, Ohio. in addition he is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren from his combined family.
