Date of Passing:

Gary L. Thompson, 75, of Wooster died peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 27, 2022.

Gary was the son of Donald and Mary (Lautzenheiser) Thompson, local natives and true salt of the earth rural citizens. Gary and his sister Joan grew up in Wooster. Gary was a member of the mighty WHS class of 1964. Following college and graduate school, he began a career in education that spanned a period of 45 years in a variety of positions that included both teaching and administration.  It was a job choice that he never regretted and provided a rewarding and enjoyable way to earn a living.

Gary and Carol (Beem) were married in 1970 and are the parents of Andrew, Meredith, Laura (deceased), and Christopher.  Parenting their children and enjoying their activities provided many delightful hours as a family.

Gary’s life was also enriched by many years of community service in both appointed and elected positions in the city and county, as well as service groups and religious activities as a member of First Presbyterian Church.

In his retirement years, Gary continued to learn and laugh in his Wooster home with his cherished wife Carol and their beloved golden retriever Scamp.

“It was a good life. May God bless you all.”

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, sister Joan Stebelton (Vernon), sister-in-law Margi Beem-Miller, infant daughter Laura, and best dog Scamp.

Gary is survived by his wife, Carol; children Andrew (Alyssa) of Indianapolis, IN, Meredith (Bill) of Wooster, OH, and Christopher (Annie) of Salem, MA; grandchildren Davis, Riley Anne, Max, Juliette, Sophie, and Lucy Thompson; brother-in-law Bruce Beem-Miller and niece and nephews in Ithaca, NY and Germany; sister-in-law Amy Phillips-Beem and niece in Ann Arbor, MI; and Stebelton nieces and nephews in the Wayne County area.

The family extends sincere thanks to Gary’s specialists at Cleveland Clinic for many years of quality care and the compassionate caregivers at Wooster Community Hospital and Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare.

Dear Chris and Family,
I’m so sorry to hear about your Dad’s death. I didn’t know your Dad but from the above reading and having seeing your values at work, he must have been loving to his family and worked hard. He will be missed deeply by both his family and the community. May he get to eternal rest.

Carol and family,
I'm so sorry to hear about Gary. You were blessed to have many extra years with him after his cancer diagnoses. I remember when he came to visit mom just before she passed from cancer, she was so happy to see him, but now they are both looking down on us from heaven. May God fill your hearts with wonderful memories. Love and prayers.

Aunt Carol, Andrew, Meredith, Chris and families,
We are sorry for your loss. Uncle Gary was a truly genuine person who always had a way of making us laugh at family gatherings. He had stories about Grandpa that we never would have expected. We know you will miss very much. Heaven has gained a gem. Love and payers to all.
Teri and Don

We just learned of Gary's passing. Please accept our deep and sincere sympathy. Gary was wonderful to work with at the College; he was great at what he did, was kind and funny and a "great guy." He provided leadership in many areas in the community and will be remembered. Our thoughts are with you, Carol, and the children and grandchildren. We also continue to think of Margi.
