WOOSTER – Gerald Eugene Hider Passed away early Monday morning at Wooster Community Hospital on August 25, 1008, of heart failure.
He was born January 23, 1915, the son of Elmer and Ethel (Bevington) Hider. He graduated from Shreve High School in 1933, where he was an active member of the F.F.A. Club.
He joined the U.S. Army in May 1941 and was discharged in December of 1945 as a Tech 5 Sergeant. He trained with General Patton’s Armored Tank Battalion at Pine Camp, NY. He was deployed with the 706th Tank Battalion to the Pacific Theatre where he saw invasion active duty on the islands of Guam, Philippines, Ie Shima, and Okinawa until the end of WWII.
He was united in marriage to LaVonne Sidle on August 28, 1947 in Wooster. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2007.
Gerald retired from Gerstenslager Body Shop in 1980 after 38 years of service as a master carpenter/cabinet maker in the bookmobile division. He enjoyed gardening and lawn care, but his favorite hobby was repairing and refinishing a great number of antique pieces of furniture.
He enjoyed spending winters in his and Mrs. Hider’s home in Lubbock, TX provided by their eldest daughter, Sheryl, also of Lubbock.
Surviving are his five children: Dr. Sheryl Mattison of Lubbock, TX, Holly (Richard) Kerschbaum of Elyria, OH, Janelle (Kirby) Davis of Dayton, OH, Geralyn (Harry) Wilson of Houston, TX, and Wylie (Cheryl) Hider of Wooster, OH.
Also surviving are 10 grandchildren John Kerschbaum of San Diego, CA, Stephanie Kerschbaum of Newark, DE, Capt. Andrew Kerschbaum with the USAF stationed in Guam, Lt. Michael Kerschbaum with the USAF stationed in Okinawa, Greg Kerschbaum of Elyria, OH, Timothy Hider of Minster, OH, Jennifer (Hider) McSorley of Guyana, S.A., Heidi Haddock of Kerrville, TX, Matthew Haddock of Denton, TX, and Kyle Davis of Moorhead, KY and three great-grandchildren and 3 nieces.
Officiating for the service will be Pastor Eric Fairhurst.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, August 29, at the McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster. Vocal music will be provided by Pastor Eric Fairhurst. Interment will be at the Plain Lutheran Church Cemetery on State Route 95, (Blachleyville Road), Wooster, OH.
Friends and relatives will be received from 5-8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
Those who wish may make contributions to the Plain Lutheran Church Cemetery Association, c/o Judy Wirt, 2020 Springville Rd., Wooster, OH or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Kenneth and Glen, a sister Marcella (Hider) Hofstetter, and several infant siblings and one niece. Gerald was a kind and gentle son, husband, father and friend to all who knew him and will be greatly missed by his beloved family.
