WOOSTER – Gerald R. Jerry LANYI, 74, of Wooster passed away Thursday, May 7, 2009 in his home.
He was born April 29, 1935 in Swissvale, PA, son of Julius and Elizabeth Chernay Lanyi.
He had been the principal at Kean and Grant Street Elementary Schools from 1972 to 1991 when he retired. He had also been a supervisor of student teachers at Ashland University. Jerry loved music and performed in many different musical organizations in Ohio and Florida. He loved golf and was an avid Pittsburg Steelers fan and enjoyed educating. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, a member of the Madisonburg Lions and the Lehigh Acres Elks in Florida.
Surviving are wife, Dayna Reynolds Lanyi, whom he married October 6, 2007; a daughter, Donna Lanyi of Wooster, and a son, John (Michelle) Lanyi of Clio, MI,, grandchildren Joshua, Christopher and Matthew Lanyi; a sister, Deanna (Jim) Kuharcik of Morganton, NC, a brother, Richard (Sally) Lanyi of Marietta, GA.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Mary Ann (Chelovsky) Lanyi, on October 17, 2005 whom he married June 28, 1958.
Friends will be received at the McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster on Monday, May 11, 2009 from 6-9:00 P.M.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at 10:00 A.M. with Father Stephen Moran officiating. Private family burial will be held.
