Gladys Hazel Mullen, 96, of Apple Creek passed away on Tuesday July 2, 2013 at Wooster Community Hospital surrounded by family and friends.
She was born on February 27, 1917, in Honeytown, to Durbin Monroe Shamp and Eva Elizabeth (Levers) Shamp.
Gladys married Vilas Sommer on December 14, 1936. He was killed in a car accident on October 12, 1937. She married Myron Sparkie Woodrow Mullen on September 3, 1939 and he preceded her in death on July 2, 2002 (the same day as Gladys just 11 years prior).
Gladys graduated from Apple Creek High School. She was an active member of her community. She retired from Waynedale High School in Apple Creek, where she worked as a cook in the cafeteria for many years. She loved her Waynedale Golden Bears and still held her reserved football and basketball seats never missing a home game until this last season. She founded and was the first president of the Southeast Community Lioness Club. She was a member of East Union Lutheran Church for more than 60 years and attended Apple Creek United Methodist Church the past 10 years.
She is survived (and will be sadly missed) by her daughters Vilet Helen (William Terry) Sommer-Burkey of Wooster and Regina Kay (Harvey Lee) Mullen-Jacobs of Orrville; grandchildren Tymothy Burkey, Tamara (Marlin) Burkey-Maddy, Justine (Rob) Heil, Randy (Holli) Jacobs, Tracey (Bill) McGrain and Amy (Dean) Worley; great-grandchildren T.J., Douglas, Carl, Andrew and Margaret Burkey, Aja Wright, Jenna (Kyle) Heil-Stewart, Dennis Heil, Garrett, Dustin, Molli and R.J. Jacobs, Zachary and Chaz McGrain, Meredith and Mallorie Worley; great-great grandchildren Paige Casady and Ava Lee Heil, Angelina Burkey and Kolt Stewart. Gladys is also survived by her sisters Martha Whittier and Mary Starr as well as her brother Delno Shamp.
She is preceded in death by her siblings Esta Snure, Estelle Gorsuch, Ralph Shamp, Richard Shamp and Lester Shamp.
A celebration of Gladys’ life will be held on Monday July 8, 2013 at 11:00 am at McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster officiated by Pastor Edward Balint. Interment will be in Apple Creek Cemetery. Following the service of committal, a meal will be served at Apple Creek United Methodist Church.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday July 7, 2013, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
