John Christopher Schmid, 73, of Wooster died on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at his home.
He was born October 24, 1947 in Holmes County to Bruce and Dorothy Schmid.   On October 12, 2013, he married Karen Goshen.   She survives.
John graduated from Ashland University and had worked as a Horticultural Technician with apple trees at the OARDC for many years.   He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Wayne County and the East Central Ohio MENSA Chapter.   John loved all kinds of sports and was a long time Indians, Buckeyes and Columbus Blue Jackets fan.   He and Karen were long standing season ticket holders of the Ohio Light Opera.   He was a computer geek at heart and loved to cook and was good at it.   John was a voracious reader, especially of Science Fiction, was an accomplished gardener and loved visiting the Southwest.   He was always prompt and loved owls and had a large collection.
Along with his wife, John is survived by his brother Bob (Cindy) Schmid of Holmes County; canine companion Fritz along with many special friends in MENSA, the UUFWC and the OARDC.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Sylvia Vernier.
A service of remembrance will be held on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at 4:00 PM at the McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster.   Private interment will be held in Newkirk Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Friends will be received one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.   The family requests that masks be worn while in the funeral home.

  2. I always looked for John’s smile in the congregation on Sunday mornings and his cheerful hello! I will miss seeing him. My deepest condolences for the family and friends

  3. We enjoyed seeing John at the UU Fellowship, and talking to him about gardening. His friendly smile and bass hello will be missed!

  4. John was such a delight to talk to and be around. He always had a smile and loved his Hawaiian shirts. He will truly be missed at the UU and my heart goes out to his wife and family during this time.

  5. My sincere condolences go out to the Schmidt family and friends. I worked with John for many years at the OARDC. John was pleasant to work with and we all enjoyed his laughter. He was easy going, smart and I enjoyed talking about his music interest while working. He will be missed by many.

  6. So sorry to read of John’s passing. He was one of our OARDC colleagues for many years. While we didn’t work directly with him daily, our interactions were always pleasant.

  7. So sorry to hear of John’s passing! He and I worked together at the OARDC and enjoyed our joint research projects over the years. Always dedicated to his job and friends! When Karen came into his life there was a new spark in his eyes that was hard to miss! My heartfelt condolences to his family!!

  8. I was deeply saddened to read in the Mensa Bulletin of John’s passing. My heart goes out to Karen whose loss I can sympathize with. Our pilgrimage to the Ohio Light Opera in July 2022 will not be the same without him.
