WOOSTER – Kelly Joan Brunn, a vibrant and much-loved English teacher at Triway High School, passed away suddenly Sunday afternoon.
She died at the Cleveland Clinic after suffering a heart attack and other complications over the weekend.
As the youngest of the 3 children of Ward Whalen and Joanne Youngen Whalen, Kelly grew up in Brooklyn Park, MN, where she loved to sing in the choir, perform in danceline and cheer for her high school.
Throughout her life, Kelly loved each of her communities, her schools and her teams. She was a Park Center High School Pirate, class of 1981; a Slippery Rock University Slimy Pebble, class of 1994; and a wholehearted Triway Titan.
Education was both her career and her passion, as she went on to earn her Master ™s degree in education, summa cum laude from Ashland University in 2014. As a passionate English teacher at Triway High School, she befriended everyone she came across. Many of her students attribute their high school graduation to her, saying she always went the extra mile to be sure their lives were going well and they were succeeding in their studies. She often sent emails to former students, checking on their progress in college and letting them know she was proud of their achievements.
Kelly’s heart overflowed with love for her family, her students, and anything furry with four legs. She had a tendency to rescue the cat stranded in the pouring rain, or the baby bird who had fallen from its nest — always careful to handle each creature with the same compassion she would show any person in her life.
Kelly ™s memory lives on in her husband, Greg; her children, Samantha and Matthew; her sisters Lisa (Phil) Weik and Wendy Dorn; her parents in-law, Jerry and Carol Brunn, of Becker, MN; brothers and sisters in-law Randy and Patty Brunn, Linda and Ralph Maegi, and Steve and Carla Brunn; and in her nieces and nephews, Sarah and Jeff Weik; Danielle Dorn (Sean) Smith and Sam (Katy) Dorn; Katelyn (Alex) Dehn and Heather (Tyler) Aldridge; Alex and Marcus Brunn; and Lia and Coleman Maegi.
Kelly was preceded in death by her parents, her cherished Auntie Virginia Stanton, her brother in-law Kevin Brunn, and her nephew Joe Brunn.
She was always up for a good conspiracy theory or a story that usually ended in her infectious laughter, and it was not uncommon to find her at a stoplight singing along to a U2 or Springsteen hit with the sunroof all the way open.
Of all of the things of which she had to be proud, Kelly was proudest of her family, who loves her to infinity and beyond.
On Friday, both the visitation and mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church in Wooster.   Visitation hours will be 2-5 p.m. and the mass will be held at 5 p.m.   A private burial will be held at a later date.
