WOOSTER – Lois Gilbert McCall died Thursday, July 7, 2011 in Wooster. She was 86 and had been living at West View Manor since suffering a stroke two years ago.
Mrs. McCall was born in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of F. Arthur and Juliette Gilbert. She was a graduate of Vassar College and earned her master’s degree at Mount Holyoke College. She met her future husband Raymond when they were both pursing doctorates at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She worked throughout her life in various writing and publishing pursuits including a stint at the Gary (Indiana) Tribune during which she covered President Franklin Roosevelt’s funeral. Mrs. McCall was also editor of the College of Wooster Chemistry Journal and later Associate Editor of the Alumni Magazine.
Her creative pursuits continued throughout her life and included jewelry design and construction. During multiple sabbaticals in London, she studied at Sir John Cass University where she obtained a prestigious Fellowship diploma from The Gemological Association of Great Britain
Mrs. McCall was active in the campus and Wooster City Communities. She was a long-time member of St. James Episcopal Church. In addition to sewing, knitting and jewelry making, Mrs. McCall was an avid reader and loved to travel. She was a loving wife and mother and blessed with many extraordinary friends.
She was preceded in death by Raymond, her husband of 53 years, with whom she shared a life of words, music, art, and travel.
She is survived by her children Susan (Mackowski), Sarah and Gib; her grandchildren Andrew, Ann and Nathan Mackowski; and her sister-in-law Mary McCall. The family is very grateful for the exceptional care provided by Carol Baughman and Jill Hockenberry during the last two years of her life.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 11, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 127 W. North St., Wooster with the Rev. Evelyn Manzella officiating. There will be no calling hours.
McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations be made to the St. James Outreach Fund or the Wayne Co. Public Library, PO Box 1349, Wooster, OH 44691.
