WOOSTER – Margaret J. Baxstrom, 89, of Wooster died peacefully at her home on Tuesday morning, March 9, 2010. She was born on June 9, 1920 in St. Clairsville, Ohio to Jack and Anna (Zuk) Topovski.
Margaret was a 1938 graduate of Wooster High School. Professor James and Frances Anderson invited Margaret to live with them after befriending the Topovski family at church. She lived from the ages of 11 to 20 in Wooster with foster siblings Frances Pat (Neal) Baker, James (Jane) Anderson, Margaret (Lloyd) Boyer, David (Donna) Anderson, and John (Barb) Anderson. In 1936, at the age of 16, Margaret was chosen as one of 3 healthiest girls in America at the National Congress of the 4-H Club.
Margaret was happily married to Emil W. Baxstrom of North Dakota for 66 years. They met at church while Margaret was working at the U.S. Army Medical Depot in San Antonio, Texas and were married soon after on July 10, 1943 in Palo Alto, Calif. After living in California, Tacoma, Wash., Denver and Seattle, they settled in Wooster, Ohio. Previously, Margaret worked in Cleveland at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and in Wooster with Dr. Robert Wright.
Margaret was the longest member of Westminister Presbyterian Church, since 1933. She enjoyed traveling, bird watching, gardening, and was an active member of the West Lincoln Way Garden Club for many years. But her greatest joy was spending time with her friends and family, particularly her many grandchildren. Margaret will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife and mother, and a caring supportive grandmother.
Margaret was preceded in death by her beloved son Ted Baxstrom; 6 brothers, Bill, Alex and Nick Lastohkein, Michael Campbell and Leon and Tony Topovski; and foster sister Frances Pat (Neal) Baker. She is survived by her sister Helen Fry and brothers John Campbell, and George and Steve Topovski.
Margaret is also survived by her loving husband, Emil; son Sandy (Jerri Lynn) Baxstrom of Wooster and their children Greta (Brian) Hoostal, Jorn (Amy) Baxstrom, Erik Baxstrom, and Jay and Jordan Vincent; daughter-in-law Deborah Baxstrom Reed; daughter-in-law Kathleen (Ted) Baxstrom of Seattle Wash. and their children Megan (John) Parkinson, Katie (Dave) Dosen and Michael Baxstrom; son Jack (Janice) Baxstrom of Wooster and their children Ashley, Bryce and Kelli Baxstrom; daughter Margie (Jim) Jones of Wooster and their children Andy (Andrea), Melanie, Christy and Danny Jones; daughter Kim (Kirk) Webb of Harrison, Tenn. and their children Natasha (David) Ballard and Holly (Brandon) York. Margaret also leaves behind 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Family burial services will be held Friday at 2:30 P.M. at the Wooster Cemetery. A memorial service with Rev. Andries Coetzee officiating will be held on Saturday at 10:30 A.M. at Westminister Presbyterian Church, Mackey Hall, 353 E. Pine St., Wooster. The family will greet friends after the service.
