WOOSTER “ Mildred L. Amstutz, 102, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on Friday, February 23, 2018.   She lived in her home in Wooster for over 80 years, despite hearing and vision and mobility impairment in her later years.   It was her fierce determination and independent spirit that kept her going strong all these years, challenging her dedicated caregivers.
Born July 12, 1915 to Welker and Alma Rickett Howman, she graduated valedictorian of her class from Nova High School in 1933.   She married Ellis Amstutz on June 9, 1937.   He preceded her in death in 1982.
She worked part-time in retail until the birth of her daughters, Judy, now of Lewisville, Texas and then Peggy, now of Tucson, Arizona.   She had many interests and hobbies and read widely.   Besides substantial vegetable and flower gardens, she especially enjoyed raising African Violets.
After her husband, Ellis, passed away in 1982, she joined the Senior Center Band and Chorus, The Elderberries, entertaining at nursing homes around the county.   She particularly enjoyed traveling on Senior Center Bus trips and visiting her daughters in Texas and Arizona.   She was also active for many years with Trinity United Church of Christ.
Mildred had one granddaughter, Stephany, married to Armando Celaya of Casa Grande, Arizona and two great-grandchildren, Matthew 13 and Alexis 9.
Her funeral will be Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at 2:00 p.m., preceded by calling hours at 1:00 p.m. at the McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster.   Burial will be at the Sonnenberg Church Cemetery in Kidron, Ohio next to her husband, Ellis.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Macular Degeneration Research, 22512 Gateway Ctr. Dr., Clarksburg, MD 20871.   Any floral arrangements will be donated later to area nursing homes.
Mildred will be remembered for her sense of humor.   She always had a joke she wanted to share.
