Paul R. Maurer, 90, Wooster went to be with his Lord and his wife on August 7, 2009. He died at his home after a short fight with cancer.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10 AM at the Wooster United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. David Wilcox officiating. Interment will follow at Apple Creek Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday August 9 from 6 PM to 8 PM at McIntire, Davis and Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster.
Paul was born on October 2, 1918 to Clifford and Blanche (Whitaker) Maurer in Apple Creek where he graduated from Apple Creek High School and worked for Jeff Carson at the local drug store. In 1940 he was drafted into the US Army where he served in the 3424 Ordinance Company. He served in the European Theatre and went into Normandy on D-Day +6. Paul maintained a strong comradeship with the men of his company and they held regular annual reunions.
Paul was discharged from the Army in 1945 and married Marie Winger on January 1, 1946. They moved to Ada, Ohio where he attended Ohio Northern University and completed pharmacy school in 3 years by attending summer schools. Upon graduation, he worked for Gallagher Drugs, a chain out of Dayton and was sent to Coshocton and then to Findley to manage their stores. He was then asked to report to Dayton and take over another store and decided to move back to Wayne County and open a store of his own. In November of 1952, he and Marie opened Maurer Pharmacy. Paul was active in the store until 1995 when he retired. During that time, he built many lasting relationships with physicians, customers and employees.
Paul is a member of the Wooster United Methodist Church and was an active member in the Wooster Noon Lions during the 50?s and 60?s.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Marie, two brothers Carl and Earl and a grandson. Surviving are his sons Paul R. II ?Rick? (Mary) of Wooster, Thomas G. ?Tom? (Toni) of Wooster, 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, brother Neal (Meg) Maurer of Florida and many nieces and nephews.
