Priscilla (Lindfors) Gates 70, of Wooster died November 1, 2008. She was a loving and supportive wife, mother, and grandmother; a caring and helpful friend too many; and a dedicated and generous volunteer. She was also a wonderful listener who was always interested in hearing about the lives and thoughts of her family, her friends, and everyone she met. An excellent pie baker with a good sense of humor, Pris cherished her family and friends and was well loved.
She is survived by John Gates, her husband of 47 years; daughters Linda(Tor) Winston of Arlington, VA, and Nancy(Greg) Gates Madsen of Decorah, IA; grandchildren Lea and Erik Winston and Anja Madsen; her father Paul Lindfors of Minneapolis, MN; brother Paul(Gail) Lindfors of N. Mankato, MN; nephew Scott Lindfors of St. Paul, MN; and niece Dawn(Ryan) Lynn of Castle Rock, CO.
Pris was born in Virginia, Minnesota, to Finnish-American parents. She attended high school in Roseville, Minnesota, and graduated from Carleton College (’60) with a degree in mathematics. She taught junior and senior high mathematics in San Jose, California; Tacoma, Washington; and Raleigh, N. Carolina. In Wooster she counseled breastfeeding mothers through La Leche League for ten years and taught childbirth preparation classes for 25. She also volunteered to help local and statewide Parkinson’s support groups.
Because Pris believed strongly in the power of volunteerism to improve society those who wish to honor her should consider offering their services to a charity of their choice. Donations in Priscilla’s name may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greater Wayne County 2525 Back Orrville Rd. Wooster, Ohio 44691 to support their goal of building a local hospice facility or to Hospice of North Central Ohio to support Hospice House in Ashland 1050 Dauch Dr. Ashland, Ohio 44805, where Pris spent her final days.
