Surjit Kaur Bains, 93, of Wooster, OH, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2020, at home with her loving family at her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Gurcharan Singh Bains (Professor, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India) who passed away in 2011.
Born in Ambala, India, she was the daughter of the late Munsha Singh and the late Basant Kaur.
A graduate of Ambala School, Surjit worked for more than ten years as a Hindi teacher in Mysore, India, before retiring. She moved with her husband to Wooster in 1993, where she quickly became a cherished member of the Viola Thorne Club of the Ohio Agricultural Research & Development Center, serving as an emotional and spiritual mentor for many of Gurcharan ™s colleagues and their families as well as many good friends at Grace Brethren Church. She won second place in the Ninth Annual Dandelion MayFest and National Dandelion Cook-off for her Chole Chick Peas Curry, despite, as she pointed out, having never tasted or cooked dandelions before. Surjit was a beacon of guidance and wisdom for both her family and friends. She reminded us all of what was important in life and never forgot it herself. She made sure to always say, œI love you and I am proud of you.
She was the loving mother of Rajindar Kaur Mathoda, the late Harvindar Singh Bains, and Amrita Kaur Takhar. She was the proud grandmother of Ranjit Singh Mathoda, Nachel Kaur Mathoda, and Karan Singh Takhar. She was the adoring great-grandmother of Simran Kaur Mathoda. She had an equal love and affection for her large extended family, including Rajindar ™s husband Kulender Singh Mathoda, Amrita ™s husband Gurpartap Singh Takhar, Ranjit ™s wife Sanja Mathoda, Nachel ™s husband Morgan Ashcom, and her many dear friends.
