APPLE CREEK – Virgil Lincoln Fisher, 86, of Apple Creek died Thursday, January 10, 2008 at his home.
Friends may call at the Apple Creek United Methodist Church on Monday, January 14, 2008 from 9:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M.
Funeral Services will be held Monday at the Church at 11:00 A.M. with the Rev. Jim Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in the Apple Creek Cemetery.
McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family with
arrangements.

He was born October 16, 1921 in Wayne County to Harry Edwin and Maranda Pearl (Whittaker) Fisher. Virgil was born at Honeytown on Route 30 east of Wooster. He married Anna Mae Hahn at the Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church in Orrville on September 14, 1947. She survives.
Virgil had lived on South Apple Creek Road since the age of five when the family moved there in 1926. During grade school he belonged to the Boy Scouts In high school he was a member of the FFA, played an electric steel guitar in a string band and played baseball with the team winning the county championship in 1941. He graduated from Apple Creek High School in 1941. He worked a few months at Smuckers in Orrville and then furthered his education at Anderson Airplane School in Nashville, Tennessee. He worked at Curtis Wright in Columbus, Ohio, until he was called to enter the service in WWII on July 29, 1943. He spent three years in the 32nd Calvary serving in Panama and Europe. He received the Purple Heart for injuries received during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944, the European Theatre of Operations ribbon and three bronze stars He was discharged on October 5, 1945.
He started farming the home farm upon his return from the service. In 1951, Virgil and Anna bought the adjoining 100 acre Jacot farm, built a chicken house in 1957 for 3000 layers, considered large at that time, with automatic feeders and waters. He also did custom combining and corn shelling around Wayne County. He also was a foreman at Shasta in Apple Creek, worked at Steiner Oil Co. and Ramada Inn in Wooster. He retired from Jewell Motor Parts in 1984. He enjoyed making things out of wood along with furniture, drying lumber and doing some repairs. Virgil also enjoyed lawn work, gardening, golfing and traveling. He enjoyed watching the Indians on T.V., playing cards and board games with friends and family. Virgil played golf with the senior men at the College of Wooster for several years.
Virgil served as a director at Dalton Equity Co., a soil conservation committeeman and on the board of Wayne Co. Farm and Home Administration, the board of governors at Wooster Community Hospital. He was a 75 year plus member of the Apple Creek United Methodist Church serving on various committees, a 50 year plus member of the IOOF Lodge-Noble Grand and other chairs, a 50 year plus member of the Apple Creek Legion, the East Union Grange serving as master and other offices, a 25 year member of the Apple Creek Volunteer Fire Department, a 20 year plus member of the Wooster Noon and Apple Creek Lions receiving the Melvin Jones Award from Wooster Noon Lions in 1999-2000. He served as a member of the Apple Creek Cemetery Association and three four year terms as East Union Trustee. Virgil was a former member of the Farm Bureau, president of the Apple Creek Senior Citizens 2005-2006 and had served as Waynedale PTA president 1968-1969.
He and Ann were named as one of the top ten Grange Couples of the Year in 1958 and he was citizen of the year at the Apple Creek homecoming in 1982. In September of 1997, Virgil and Ann celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Apple Creek United Methodist Church with a dinner for around 200 family, relatives and friends. In 2007, they celebrated their 60th anniversary.
They had traveled all 88 counties of Ohio finding and taking pictures of Ohio Barns for the 200th anniversary in 2003. They traveled to 49 states, took a cruise to Venezuela, South America and six other Caribbean Islands. Visited several places in Canada including Canadian Rockies and Nova Scotia, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and into Mexico. Through the years, they enjoyed finding and photographing covered bridges and lighthouses.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Sandra Ann (Robert) Doehler of Steep Falls, ME, Virginia Lynn (Jerry) Allen of Apple Creek and Wanda Kay (Joseph) Lang of West Salem, OH; 12 grandchildren, 1 step-grandchild and 7 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Donald W. Fisher and sister-in-law Mildred Fisher.
Cherished memories of Dad – a humble and gentle man will remain with those whose lives he touched. He instilled in us the values of a loving family. He took great pride in his role as a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be greatly missed but fondly remembered by all that knew him.
