WOOSTER – W. Newell Silvey, 91, of Wooster, died peacefully on Tuesday April 14, 2009, at Westview Manor, ending a life lived always as a gentleman.
Born April 7, 1918, in Bloomington, Ill. to the late William and Maude (Harpster) Silvey, Newell graduated Bloomington High School class of 1936, and Illinois Wesleyan University class of 1940. On June 1, 1942, in Chicago, Newell married his wife of over 57 years, Elizabeth ?Betty? Goudie Silvey. Betty preceded him in death in 1999.
Newell enlisted in the Army Air Corp in May of 1942, and served in the 12th Weather Squadron in Algiers, Casablanca, and Italy. At the time of his discharge from the service in December 1945 he was acting First Sergeant, Headquarters, 12th Weather Squadron. Newell moved his family from Deerfield, Ill to Wooster in 1964, where he continued to work as a manufactures representative for the Franklin Picture Frame Company until his retirement in 1981. He faithfully served as an ordained elder and deacon for both the First Presbyterian Church in Deerfield and the First Presbyterian Church in Wooster. Betty and Newell built and lived the life that they had written about and dreamed of during their separation through the war years.
Newell is survived by his daughters Janalee Silvey of Northfield and Patricia (Dennis) Yanchunas of Longmont, CO; grandchildren Andy (Abby) Yanchunas of Jackson Twp and Claire Braddock of Montrose, CO and a great grandson Mason Braddock.
Along with his wife and parents, Newell was preceded in death by a sister Jean Powell. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 17, 2009, at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church, 621 College Avenue, Wooster, with the Revs. Jim Watt and Jim Bean officiating. Interment will follow at Wooster Cemetery where military rites will be observed.
The family will receive friends on Thursday (today) April 16, 2009, from 6-8 pm at McIntire, Davis and Greene Funeral Home, 216 East Larwill Street, Wooster.
