WOOSTER – Walter John Tarnacki, 88, of Wooster died Sunday, November 22, 2009 in Wooster Community Hospital after a short illness.
He was born July 31, 1921 in Jersey City, NJ, the son of John and Eleanor (Zorcykowska) Tarnacki. He grew up in South River, NJ, attended a Polish parochial grammar school and graduated from South River High School in 1940. A WWII veteran, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps as a technical specialist for General MacArthur’s radio headquarters in the Philippines, New Guinea and Australia.
On June 30, 1951, he married Jean Donegan, who survives. A graduate of Rutgers University, he was a ceramic engineer in Pennsylvania and Maryland before moving to Orrville in 1958 to work for U.S. Stoneware Co. (later Norton Company) and was a manufacturing manager for 28 years retiring in 1986 as general manager for one of Norton’s North America divisions. He lived in Wooster since 1960.
Mr. Tarnacki belonged to the Wooster Rotary, VFW, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and was a longtime active member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Wooster. He was a regular and enthusiastic patron of the Wayne County Public Library for many decades, feeding an active intellectual curiosity particularly for current affairs and spirituality. He was a loved and dedicated husband and father.
Besides his wife of 57 years, Jean, he is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Claire Tarnacki of Evanston, IL., (Rob Sernus) and Anne Baker (Maurice) of Freehold, NJ, a son Mark of Burlington, VT, a brother, John of Sayreville, NJ, two grandchildren Caroline and Ellen Hill and extended family.
A funeral mass will be Saturday, November 28 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Wooster. Friends may call Friday evening from 6-8:00 P.M. at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home which is handling arrangements. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or the Wayne County Public Library or any charity.
