RITTMAN – Wilmouth Anne Kuffner, 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 9, 2009 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Rittman.
She was born on October 18, 1915 in St. Bethlehem near Clarksville, TN to W. Morris and Elizabeth (Webb) Clendenin. After attending Austin Peay State College and Baptist Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Clarksville, she earned a certificate as a registered nurse in Tennessee in January, 1940. Anne then worked for the Red Cross and for the Army in Mississippi during WWII. There she met her husband, George H. Kuffner, Sr., who was also serving in the US Army, and they married October 14, 1943. After WWII, they moved to Staten Island, NY and then settled in South Plainfield, NJ to raise their family.
While raising her son (George) as well as having a significant role in helping to raise her niece (Karen Kuffner Benson) and nephew (Harold Kuffner), Anne worked part-time as a Visiting Nurse in Plainfield, NJ. She also loved to play bridge with her friends, and was an active member of the United Methodist Women’s Circle Groups at both the Plainfield United Methodist Church in Plainfield, NJ and the Wesley United Methodist Church in South Plainfield, NJ. She was a member of Roadrunners Club and Cotillion, and spent a lot of time volunteering for the Women’s Auxiliary at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, NJ.
In June, 2005, due to declining health including advanced Parkinson’s disease, Anne and her husband were relocated to Wooster to be closer to their son. Since moving to Ohio she has been a resident at the Apostolic Christian Home in Rittman. Her husband, George H. Kuffner, Sr., passed away at this facility December 1, 2005, after 62 years of marriage.
She is survived by a son, George H. Jr. (Lynne) Kuffner of Wooster, a very special niece, Karen Kuffner (Kevin) Benson, of Staten Island, NY; a very special nephew, Harold (Karen) Kuffner of Staten Island, NY; sister, Druscilla (Webb) Bumpus of Clarksville, TN; niece, Dr. Betty (Bumpus) Meriwether of Clarksville, TN; grandsons, Todd of London, UK and Kevin (Rachel Yoder) of Orrville; a great-grandson, Dominik Kuffner and step-granddaughter, Zaria Yoder both of Orrville; grand-nieces and grand nephews: Jessie and Christopher Kuffner, Jimmy McKeon and Brendan Benson all of Staten Island, NY, and Jennifer Benson of Charlotte, NC; and many other relatives and friends.
McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home of Wooster are handling her cremation and local arrangements. There will be no local calling hours.
A military Veterans Memorial Service celebrating both Anne and George’s lives and their service to our country in the US Army during WWII is being planned to take place in the next few months near Anne’s birthplace in the Clarksville, TN area.
The family wants to especially thank Dr. Eugene Petrilla and all the staff and volunteers at the Apostolic Christian Home, who consistently gave expert, kind, compassionate, and loving care to Anne during the nearly 4 years that she resided there.
