Wooster – Harold W PICKING, 94, of Wooster passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2011 in Wayne Manor.
Harold was born July 10, 1916 in Rowsburg, Ohio, son of Joseph W. and Ethel Hetzler Picking.
He had owned and operated Pickings Nut and Candy Shop and Dari-land. He was also sales and construction manager for Curry Lumber. Harold was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday School and served on Church Council..
During WWII Harold worked with the U.S. Employment Service at Goodyear Aircraft Co. as a labor recruiter for Naval Aviation Contracts. He received the Goodyear Litchfield award for exceptional contributions to the war effort. He enjoyed cards, movies and family gatherings. He had traveled to every state and Canadian Province, Mexico and the Orient and all over Europe. He was an avid scouter earning the rank of Eagle Scout and was Scout Master for Troop #61 and served on the committee for Troop #65 and helped shape the lives of many scouts.
Surviving are his children, Larry W Picking of Beverly, MA, Joanne L Mongeau of Wooster, Carol (Gary) Miller of Jeromesville, David R. (Jane) Picking of Wooster, and Linda (Kenneth) McNeil of Wooster, 12 grandchildren, Karen Etheredge, David Mongeau, Kathy Miller, Jeff Miller, Cindy Veraldo, Brian and Jessica Picking, Tony, Chuck, Joseph, and Sarah McNeil, Marcie Dillon; 13 great-granddaughters, 1 great-grandson; brothers Marshall Picking of Ashland and Robert Picking of Lady Lakes, Florida, sisters Patsy Renney of Lorain and Shirley Purdy of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Alma L. Webb Picking in 1995 whom he married February 26, 1938, a brother Donald and a sister Evelyn.
Services will be held Monday, April 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church, 301 N. Market St., Wooster with the Rev. Dr. Alan E. Nathan officiating. Interment will follow in the Rowsburg Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster on Sunday afternoon from 2-4:00 p.m..
