WOOSTER – Jack L. Hurt 87, passed away May 24th at Smithville Western Care Center after a brief period of declining health. He was born October 6th, 1930 at Lakewood Hospital, Lakewood, Ohio, to ReJane Bowman and George Hurt. He was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he attended Broad Ripple High School. Enlisting in August of 1948 in the Marine Corps Reserves, he was called to active duty in August of 1950. After completing his basic training and combat training, he was sent to Korea at the beginning of the Korean War. Wounded twice he was awarded the Purple Heart with palm. A sales representative all of his life he moved to Wooster in 1970 where he married his wife, Ardenna Mellinger, on January 31 st and went to work for The Wooster Brush Company, He retired from Marcoa Publishing, San Diego, CA, producers of Chamber of Commerce Directories in 1992.
He was a life member of Wooster Elks Lodge No. 1346, chaired Wooster’s 175th  Anniversary Parade for the Elks in 1983, and served as Exalted Ruler in 1989-90. He was also a member of the American Legion, the VFW, the Masonic Lodge, and Wooster Emblem Club No. 374. After retiring, he was a volunteer for Americorps, and decided to go back to school attending, Akron University, Wayne College at Orrville, Ohio where he made the Dean’s list for two years.
Jack is survived by wife, Ardenna, sons David (Kelly) of Flatwoods, KY, Steve of Wooster, daughters Laura (Gary) Tenney of Pierceton, IN, and Christine (Stuart Leete) Jones of Rio Vista, CA; grandchildren, Phil and Jeff Tenney, Rachel Tompos; Justin, serving in the U.S. Air Force at Ramstein, Germany, Travis and Lucas Hurt; Landin Noland, and six great grandchildren. A sister, Henrietta Armstrong of Dublin, OH also survives. His parents preceded him in death as well as brother & sister-in-law, George (Helen) Hurt, Jr. and an infant granddaughter, Nicole Marie Tenney.

The family wishes to extend thanks to the staff of Wooster Community Hospital and Home Health Care, Smithville Western Care Center, and LifeCare Hospice for their compassion and care.    
Calling hours will be Thursday, May 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mcintire, Bradham and Sleek Funeral Home with the Elks Memorial Service at 5:30 p.m. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 1st at the Funeral Home with interment of the cremains at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, at 1 p.m.
