Mary Brotton Ickes, 63, of Wooster passed away on Friday, March 15, 2019 at Ohio ™s Hospice LifeCare after a long struggle with MS.
She was born July 23, 1955 in Waynesburg, PA, the daughter of Cecil Carl and Dorothea L. Arnett Brotton, Jr.
She married Randy J. Ickes on January 14, 1999. He preceded her in death in January of 2012.
Mary had worked as the Wayne County Dog Warden from 1984 until 2003. She had also been the Shelter Director at the Wayne County Humane Society. Mary loved animals, reading and spending time in the company of friends and family.
She is survived by stepchildren Ben Ickes of Kent, OH, Amy (Shawn) Kaylor of Wooster, and Tim (Mia) Ickes of Martins Ferry, OH; her siblings, Karyl B. Swartz of Wooster, Sue (Jeff) Rhodes of Wooster, and Steve (Laura) Brotton of Coral Springs, FL; grandchildren Winston and Jackson Kaylor; nephews, Alex Brotton, Matt Brotton, and Shawn Kaylor; and a niece, Amanda Brotton.
Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.
Friends will be received 1 hour prior to the 1:00 p.m. Service of Remembrance on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at the McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster with Pastor Paul Bartholomew officiating.

  1. Karyl, Sue, Amy and the rest of your family, I am so sorry for your lost. I didn’t know her long but I sure did grow very fond of her in the short time I did. I am so grateful for my time with her, for our chats. I will treasure those memories forever. Praying for all of you.

  4. Karyl, Sue and Steve,

    I have such fond memories of Mary and you, Steve, coming back to the the apartment (719) while I lived there. Mary and you rescued Toffee who became my first cat and really began my love of cats. It was an “omen” of Mary’s future in caring for lost and/or homeless animals. In the intervening years I have on occasion run into Mary and was always happy to have the opportunity to connect with her and ask about all of you. My sincere condolences to you. She was a truly good and sweet person. By the way, if you have had contact with Sarah Miles at the funeral home, she is my daughter.
