WOOSTER – Joyce Chenevey, 90 years of age, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2020, at Avenue at Wooster.   She was born on May 21, 1929 in Wooster, OH to the late Albert and Belle (Girard) Schafer.   Joyce graduated from Wooster High School in 1948 and married her high school sweetheart, Melvin Chenevey.   He preceded her in death in 1999.
Joyce was a lifelong member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church where she was an active member of the Church Choir, past Grand Regent of Catholic Daughters of America, Court Wooster, past President of St. Mary School Parent-Teacher Association, and a volunteer with Wooster Women ™s Guild. Joyce and Mel were founding members of the Wooster Heart to Heart Group.   Joyce was a very social person, loved parties, and a good game of euchre.      
Joyce is survived by her children, Jeanne (Mike) Keenan of Westerville, OH, Victoria Chenevey of Long Beach, CA, Melvin Joseph (Carol) Chenevey of Wooster, Connie (Mitch) Wile of Venetia, PA, Paula (Art) Chenevey, of Wooster, and Mark Chenevey of Long Beach, CA; 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren with one on the way; sisters Elaine (Bill) Forrer of Dalton, OH and Jacqueline Docherty Mintz of Ontario, Canada, and a brother Ronald Schafer of Wooster, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter Judy Mae, and sisters Corrine Elliott, Regina Knight, and Joan Schafer.
Due to the current Covid-19 Pandemic, a private family graveside service will be held at St. Mary ™s Cemetery. There will be a celebration of Joyce ™s life at a later date.   McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster is assisting the family.

  3. So very sorry for the loss of your Mother. She has been a very dear friend for many, many years. I did get to visit her often when she was living at Smithville-Western. Sorry I didn’t get to visit her at The Avenue.
    All of your family is in my thoughts and prayers, and now she is with her Melvin.

  10. joyce was a salt of the earth woman who loved to laugh and plan adventures, small and large. she was our neighbor and friend when she lived on cher court. we had wonderful meals and talks. on one occasion I took her to her doctor after a fall and the whole time she was talking about what she was going to do once the broken part healed. she was a treasure and her love will bless her family and all her knew her forever.

She was always such a fun and welcoming mom, and she always had a smile waiting to bestow on anyone she encountered.   12. As a kid you can never have enough Mom figures in your life to help you grow, learn and laugh. Mom Chenevey was a great one and for that I am blessed.   13. As a resident at Wayne Manor Joyce became my friend. We shared good and sad times together . Joyce is not really gone she lives within my heart. She will live in your heart also as you share so many loving memories of her. God bless.

  18. I met Aunt Joyce and Uncle Mel when I was just dating their nephew, Gale(57 yrs ago) and they were so friendly and loving and made me feel welcome to the Family. Aunt Joyce always looked beautiful and was full of joy and laughter. I will remember her at the 2019 Chenevey Reunion when almost all her Family came to celebrate her 90th Birthday.I can still see her tossing water balloons and wearing the pink boa I got her. She will be missed.RIP Aunt Joyce

  20. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. As her case manager for a number of years(before Wayne Manor being reassigned) I was lucky to get to meet a very feisty, caring, loving woman. She loved her family and appreciated all that they did for her and provided to her. She appreciated each and every one of you for different things. I am very sorry for your loss.

  24. 60 years ago, Mr and Mrs Chenevey were customers on my paper route. I always enjoyed seeing and talking with their children and them; both on my paper route and at St. Mary’s Church. The family was so happy and parents so kind. God bless the Chenevey family. Mrs Chenevey joins many of her dear friends and husband in Heaven.

  26. I just found out about Aunt Joyce’s passing. I’ll be praying for your comfort and peace at this time and look forward to seeing you when that is possible. I loved Aunt Joyce, she was always so much fun. She lived a long life to 90 like her sister Gina, my mom. Today is 2 years since my mom’s passing. Now they are together again, in heaven!
