Dr. Erwin M. Kohler, 90, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2021, in his own home where he was still lovingly tending a gardenia tree and roses, and feeding birds. His family would like to offer a big thank you to his neighbors who helped him achieve his wish of remaining in the home he has loved since 1965.
Erwin was born June 24, 1930 in St. Bernard, Ohio, the son of Erwin A. and Clara M. Kohler. He married Gelsomina A. Madonna in Philadelphia, PA, March 20, 1954. They were married for 57 years.
Erwin graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine of Ohio State University in 1955. He was a practicing veterinarian in Winchester, VA from 1955-62. He then returned to Ohio State University and was awarded a MS degree in 1963, and PhD degree in 1965. He joined the faculty of the Food Animal Health Research Program at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in 1965 and served as the head for 16 years. He enjoyed supporting the development and advancement of faculty and staff. He conducted research on animal diseases until he retired in 1992. He was a Professor and Asst. Dean of the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine. He received the Distinguished Alumnus award from the College of Veterinary Medicine in 1992. He was a past member of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Assn. and the American Assn. of Swine Practitioners from which he received the Howard Dunne Award. He was a life member of the American Veterinary Medical Assn.   He was a life member and Sec.-Treas. of the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Disease for 18 years and the dedicatee in 1994.
He was a member of the Wooster United Methodist Church. He was an active member of the Westwood Ruritan Club. He was a past-president and Life member of the Wooster Noon Lions Club, and recently honored with the Melvin Jones Fellow award for his countless contributions of service for over 50 years.
He was a volunteer with the Medical Alert Program of the Wooster Community Hospital Auxiliary since 1992. He donated more than 26 gallons of blood. He enjoyed reading, camping, travel, gardening, woodworking, helping his children with home improvements, genealogy and telling humorous stories.
He especially enjoyed time with family and friends and will be dearly missed by all.
He is survived by his son Alfred E. (Robye) Kohler of Birmingham, AL, and his daughter Linda D. (Tim) Corman of Richfield, OH and grandchildren, Steven (Teresa) Corman, Amy (Jefferson) Amstutz, Austin Kohler, and AJ Kohler, great-grandchildren, Eleanor and Lillian Corman.
He is also survived by his sister Diane (Jody) Ballard, niece Crissy (Richard) Worms, nephew Jode (Deborah) Ballard, and five great nephews. He always remembered birthdays and enjoyed visits and reunions with extended family.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gelsey, his parents and sister, Barbara.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.

  2. I’m so sorry for your lost. I cleaned for your parents, Gelsy and I would talk after I got done cleaning. Erwin got me started in violets and still have the ones he gave me growing. Your parents was a very loving couple and I enjoyed cleaning and got to know them. Prayers for your family. RIP Kohler’s

  5. I was blessed with over 30 years of friendship with you – at OARDC and especially as table mates at Lions club. I’ll miss your sharp wit and warm camaraderie, and of course, the occasional gardenia for Sandy. Rest in peace.

  6. I consider Erw one of my best friends. I first got to know him through lions. We sat at the same table for about 15 years. We would talk often. Mostly about travel and our late wives, both of whom were taken from us far too soon. I’ll miss our conversations. Erw’s stories and bad jokes. Our drives to Lion Banquets. I will miss my friend. Until we meet again may God him in the palm of his hands.

  7. So sorry for the family and community loss for a great man. I had the privilege of working with Erwin on his PhD in 1965 with germ free pigs. He will be missed.

  8. I really enjoyed talking with Erwin at Health Point. In the exercise swimming pool. He was so easy to talk with. You are missed Erwin
