Willie James House Sr., age 90 of Wooster, beloved husband of 67 years to Ernestine House (nee Gadsden), entered to rest on Friday, December 8 at his home surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on December 30, 1932, to Arthur House Sr. and Cassie Berry House in Leesburg, FL

Willie served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was also an active member of the Wooster American Legion. He was a long-time member of the Masonic Temple organization, recognized as the Mason of the Year in 2010.

He was dedicated to serving his local and church community, you could always count on Willie to lend a helping hand. He was a 30+ year blood donor through the American Red Cross and other blood collection agencies; he received several commendations for his commitment to blood donation.

Willie worked at the Wooster Post Office where he retired after 30 years working in the maintenance department. He was also employed as a bus driver for the Wooster City Schools District.

He was a life-long member of Second Baptist Church, serving on the Deacon Board and numerous other committees. He raised his family in the church and was a respected leader and mentor.

Willie was a devoted husband, father, grandpoppy, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to so many. Despite his quiet demeanor, he always expressed his beliefs assertively, never in a harsh or overbearing manner. His calm and loving presence was reassurance to his family. He exemplified his role as the patriarch by providing not only financial support, but also love and spiritual guidance, establishing his family on a foundation of love, faith, and prayer. He served as a father figure to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Willie was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He loved reading the Wooster, Akron, and Cleveland daily newspapers, gardening, and working with his hands.

He is preceded in death by his father Arthur House Sr., his mother, Cassie Berry House, brothers Bishop Arthur “Kenny” House Jr., Gold “Buddy” Maynor, Robert House and sisters Mary Steele, Margaret Gaddy, and Evelyn Lowery, his daughter Persophenea House and granddaughter, D’Naila House.

Willie is survived by his sisters, Ruby Thomas (Steven) of Cayce, SC, Carolyn Diaz of Ocala, FL, Shirley Inman (Charles), Annie House of Wooster, and Margaret Moore of Lakeland, FL, and brother Alvin House (Olivia) of Hanover, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; his children Willie James House Jr. (Linda) of Mansfield, Virnette House-Browning of Westlake, Dwayne House, Darrell House of Wooster and Juan (Amy) McCloud of Wooster; and 8 grandchildren, Darrion House of Upper Arlington, D’Vaughn House of Cincinnati, D’Metre House of Canton, D’Quan Marsh of Wooster, D’Nasia House of Hanover, MD., Jordon Bacon (Anthony) and Chelsea House of Wooster, Aidan Browning of Westlake; and 11 great grandchildren.

The Visitation and Service will be held on Friday, December 22 at Second Baptist Church, 245 S. Grant Street, Wooster. The Visitation will be held from 9 – 11 a.m. followed by the service from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Interment will be held promptly at 2:15 pm at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Seville, Ohio 44273

  1. I remember Mr. House being my bus driver and also seeing him at the post office. It’s funny how certain families stand out in our memories. Sending my condolences to the families of Mr. House and may he rest in peace.

  7. I worked with Willie when he was a driver for the partial hospitalization program at the Counseling Center. He was always kind and caring and definitely a favorite of our clients. Thank you Willie for all your good works. Thank you Willie’s family for sharing him with us. You are in my Prayers.

Mr. House, a man who served his country in several capacities, served his community in several capacities, served his church unselfishly and provided “The Gift of Life” numerous times over a period of more than 30 years.
