Eleanor (Ogie) Dice, age 96, of Wooster, died Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at Danbury Woods of Wooster with family at her bedside.

Ogie was born February 17, 1927, in Tampa, Florida to Alexander and Lucie Wood Gillis. At the age of 2, her family moved to New Jersey. She loved to tell stories of her life including excursions to New York City on the train, ferry, and subway.  As a Girl Scout, she started her long life of helping others by picking currants on nearby farms during World War II. Ogie was a devoted Christian and a dedicated member of Zion Lutheran Church where she participated in Women’s Circle, Altar Guild, Bell Choir and began the Prayer Shawl ministry which continues today. She was very involved in the P.E.O. Sisterhood whose primary focus is on assisting women achieve their educational goals. Ogie also participated in Church Women United, The Wooster Symphony Women’s Committee, and Junior Women’s Guild. For many years, she faithfully volunteered as a “Pink Lady” at Wooster Community Hospital.

Ogie met her husband Don at Miami University on a blind date. They married after graduation in 1948 and moved to Wooster where she worked at the College of Wooster as a dietitian. Ogie is survived by three children, Dr. Bill (Josette Teuscher) Dice; Rick (Sharon) Dice; and Darcy (Scott) Becker; three grandchildren, Megan (Matt) Berry; Alex (Corinna) Becker and Ken (Brandi) Becker; two great grandchildren, Hudson Becker and Russell Berry.

Ogie’s hobbies included playing golf at the College of Wooster and Juli Fe Golf Club leagues, playing bridge, and having lunch with her many friends.  She always brought banana bread to anyone who needed a little extra love. She and her husband Don spent many winters living in Pinehurst, N.C. where she enjoyed volunteering in golf tournaments. While she lived at Danbury Woods, she and her friend “Mouse” were famous for their Tuesday gift shop and for attending just about every social or crafting event that was planned.

Ogie was proceeded in death by her husband Donald Dice, her parents Alexander and Lucie Gillis, her sister Margaret Butner and granddaughter Gretchen Dice.

A Celebration of Life service is planned on January 5 at 2:00 to be held at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Marty Jacobson officiating.

  3. I am a PEO sister who fondly remembers Ogie at meetings but most especially at our book group. Ogie always had good observations to add to our discussions.

  6. Sorry about the loss of your mom. I know she and my mom were busy with the Wooster Symphony activities many years ago. You are fortunate to have had her for such a long time. Sounds like she had a wonderful long life! 🙏

    Condolences from all the Reiman’s on the passing of your mother. I remember her smiles and laughter as she was in constant motion.
