Eugene Michael Modarelli, 89, of Wooster died on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare.

He was born September 29, 1934 in Youngstown to the late Sylvester and Philomena Schettine Modarelli.  He graduated from Chaney High School.  He served in the U.S. Navy and Reserves as a 3rd Class Petty Officer Heavy Duty Electrician on the aircraft carrier USS Saratuga CVA60.

Eugene worked for the Ohio Bell Telephone Company where he realized that almost everything travels through telephone lines.  He became involved with the computer world for Savings & Loan Associations to process their activity online, through telephone lines.  When the Federal Home Loan Bank (5th District), in Cincinnati, was going to start a computer center for their members, he was hired to become part of the team to process their Savings & Loan activity online.  First Federal of Wooster was one of the members.  He then came to Wooster for First Federal and set them up with an in house computer system.

He was active in the community.  He was a distinguished past president of Kiwanis, past president of the Inter-club council, a member of the Elks, and past president and trustee for the Lamplighter Club.  He enjoyed cooking, fishing, poker and traveling to visit his children and relatives and, as a private pilot, he enjoyed flying.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Marie (Alfred) Scarsella, Twila (Harold) Meckulch, Mildred (James) Tarantino; brothers Donald (in WWII) and Sylvester “Bud” Modarelli.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Sue Lang Modarelli whom he married on October 8, 1986; sons Nicholas (Arlene) of Cincinnati, Michael (Marilyn) of Kidron and Donald (Ann) of Sydney, Australia; daughters Jeanette Marie (Matt) Dillon of Sebring, FL and Carolyn Jean Modarelli of Wooster; step-daughter Alyssa (Donald) Walton of Wooster; grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by his former wife, Carole Jean Modarelli of Bradenton, FL.

He will be missed by his two little buddies, Coco and Xanadu.

A private family service was held on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.  Burial was in Wooster Cemetery.

McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster assisted the family.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare, 1900 Akron Rd., Wooster, OH 44691 or to the Wayne County Humane Society, 1161 Mechanicsburg Rd., Wooster, OH 44691.
