Susan Delilah (Riynock) Grassman departed this life on her own terms Tuesday, March 12th having suffered a stroke on March 9th at Burbank Parke Care Center, where she has resided since her initial stroke in September, 2019. Though physically impaired, her dynamic personality and warm nature captured the hearts of all who interacted with her while entrusted to the care of the amazing staff at Burbank Parke. During the COVID epidemic the staff became an extension of her own family, treating her as a favored “Grandma”, which is how they referred to her at all times.

She graduated from Loudonville High School in 1959 and earned her Associate Degree in Interior Design from LaSalle University. Suzie worked full time as a phlebotomist at Wooster Community Hospital, then as Laboratory Manager at the Wooster Clinic, rounding out her career as an account manager for both Roche Pharmaceuticals and LabCorp.

During 58 years of marriage to the love of her life, Joe Grassman, she raised 5 children as well as opening their home to numerous friends, family and strangers in need. She was well known for her hospitality, sarcastic wit and generous spirit. She was dedicated, not only to her husband and children, but also to her parents, 3 sisters and a plethora of much beloved in-laws.

She was a strong supporter of her children’s and grandchildren’s endeavors and spent many years attending numerous athletic events, horse shows, theatrical productions and intellectual competitions.

Suzie was an active member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and teaming with Joe as team members for the Marriage Encounter program. She spent many years involved with the parish school PTA, Bingo program and Parish Council.

Suzie loved to travel, with her favorite spot being Pelee Island. She spent many summers on the island at her grandparent’s cottage and continued the tradition with her family and friends.

She is survived by her sisters Julia Grassman, Patty (Gary) Stumbaugh and Mary Lee Myers, Sister-in-law Lucille Gaumer, 5 children Patricia Gould (Tom Feldhausen), Carla Eighinger (Dave), Jennifer Hilaman (Richard), Andrea Hardesty and Joe Grassman (Tina), 11+ adoring grandchildren and 3+ great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Stephen Moran on Tuesday, April 2, at 11:00 AM at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 527 Beall Ave., Wooster.

Friends may call on Monday, April 1, from 7:00-9:00 PM at McIntire, Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill St., Wooster with a rosary service starting at 6:30.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be sent to Burbank Parke, 14976 Burbank Rd., Burbank, Ohio 44214. Please add “Suzie-Q” to the memo, as these funds will be used for a memorial courtyard project.

  8. So sorry for your loss. I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers. I would always admire the beautiful hanging baskets as I drove past the place on Smithville-Western. I believe someone told me that your father took care of them though. Have memories of years ago when you girls would come to my parents farm on Geyers Chapel Road. Hold tight to all your wonderful memories of your mom. Very sorry.
